Wine tourism and tour of wine cellars

Croatia can be divided into 4 wine regions:

  1. Continental region - Continental Croatia is characterized by cold winters and warm summers. However, the subregions of central Croatia and northwestern Croatia are significantly colder than Slavonia and the Danube region, which is why aromatic varieties such as sauvignon or nutmeg and cold-resistant Rhine Riesling are grown with particular success in the western parts.
  • Research - favorable climate, warm summers and stabilizing influence of the sea in the coastal area of western Istria around Umag and Buje, and high altitude of central Istrian vineyards, mostly located on the slopes of Ćićarija, had a very positive effect on the development and nurturing of millennial winemaking tradition. Today, thanks to this unbroken tradition, Istria is one of the largest wine-growing regions in Croatia, with a total area of over 6000 hectares of vineyards.
  • Coast - here we find equally continental and Mediterranean varieties, which give top results here. The most important variety in Kvarner is Žlahtina, and among the whites we can also find Chardonnay, Sauvignon white, Pinot noir and Pinot Gris, world, well-known varieties that give excellent results here, and Muscat white, a variety that is most often called Muscat Momjanski. The area is also rich in rare, indigenous grape varieties, which, unfortunately, have largely disappeared from intensive production. However, in recent years, their revitalization has taken place, especially in the Croatian Littoral, which is supported by the orientation of the market towards indigenous, original products.
  • Dalmacija - Dalmatia is divided into three subregions: northern Dalmatia, central and southern Dalmatia and the Dalmatian hinterland. In northern Dalmatia, with the exception of the Primosten vineyards, the vineyards are far from the coast, so here the wines are fresher and livelier than in southern Dalmatia, and do not have the characteristics of the continental climate that can be found in the Dalmatian hinterland. Central and southern Dalmatia is a typical Mediterranean region and almost all varieties that can be found there are indigenous. Due to centuries of adaptation to climate and soil, they give the best results on sunny slopes facing the sea.

Wine tourism contains many activities that wine lovers can enjoy. Wineries all over Croatia have special days where you can try their wines, get a first-hand insight into where and how wine production takes place in their cellars, and most of you can walk through the vineyards. Some people visit certain restaurants to try unique wines, while others visit wine festivals, but wine tourism combines the best aspects of the wine experience - travel, fine wines and the history behind them. Wine tourism is any activity that involves drinking, tasting or buying wine, often near a vineyard where the ingredients of the wine that is drunk at that time are grown.
